Mystic Creations by M is a product of lockdown boredom and a desire to create affordable jewellery options.

Hi, I'm Mikayla, the owner of Mystic Creations by M. I'm a 20-something year old from Cape Town, South Africa. I've grown up here, and I love my country - and love supporting fellow local small businesses. I am really passionate about community and engaging and supporting each other, fostering a space where we can all help each other.

I am super passionate about conservation and the ocean and all things marine life - especially turtles. I have a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, Biology and Ocean & Atmospheric Science. My dream is to work in Marine Conservation, and hopefully one day in Turtle Rehabilitation.

I am neurodivergent and bisexual, so I always work very hard to make sure I foster an inclusive community and ensure everyone feels included in my spaces. I also normally have blue hair (although at the moment it's my natural brown to give it a break from all the dyeing). I am an avid reader and book collector and my genres of choice include  fantasy, romance and contemporary - mostly YA and adult. I am a bit of a hoarder, and love collecting anything from crystals and gemstones to books and stationery.

My own passions are evident in my jewellery work - I create items that reflect my passion for the ocean, my love for reading and my crystal- collector habits.

Obviously, I love making jewellery. It is something I started during the COVID Lockdown, when I needed a solution for my boredom whilst being stuck at home, and a way to help my family financially through the lockdown. It started mostly because I wanted Jewellery that I couldn't afford, and had most of the supplies to make it myself - so I started to learn! I am self-taught, learning through many YouTube videos, Pinterest content and googling loads of inspiration, as well as many mistakes along the way. I first got into wire-wrapping crystals, shells and gemstones for necklaces, and slowly expanded from there. Some of my favourite crystals and gemstones include Fluorite, Labradorite and Chrysocolla. I have a huge collection of my own crystals, gemstones, minerals, rocks, sea glass and shells - as well as necklaces made for myself. I love beach combing and rock-hounding and would love to find time to do more of it. 

When I first started making jewellery, it was mostly for myself, but my friends and peers saw it, loved it and requested their own too. Because I started making jewellery for myself as I couldn't afford it as a broke student, my goal has always been to keep my prices as low as possible and try keep everyone happy. I am always offering discounts, sales and I accept offers and combos for those who can't afford full price. I love making custom pieces and exploring lots of new ideas.

I wear about 3-7 necklaces each day, usually 5 necklaces, including my 3 daily necklaces, a turtle, shark tooth and quartz. And then I swap out another 2-4. I love expressing myself through my jewellery - the quirkier the better! One of my favourite necklace finds is a mermaid-skeleton. I've got so many unique charms and items that I've turned into jewellery, from thrifting to purchasing from fellow small businesses.
